Chauffeur hire in Italy is governed by Law no. 21 of 15 January 1992 and subsequent amendments. It requires the service to be booked in advance by a specific client, the vehicle to be stationed at its own base, and every journey to be logged before departure.
Three practical consequences follow: the car must be booked and cannot be hailed on the street; the fare is freely agreed between the parties rather than set by a meter; and the service can reach any destination in Italy or abroad, without the territorial limits that apply to taxis.
NCC drivers must be registered with the Chamber of Commerce drivers' register and hold the Professional Driving Certificate (CAP/KB), alongside the licence category appropriate to the vehicle. Add to that detailed local knowledge and ongoing road-safety training.
Vehicles used for chauffeur hire carry specific passenger-transport insurance covering the people on board. This is a substantial difference from a private lift or a self-drive rental, where cover for transported third parties is not comparable.
